Clos Saint Michel, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Speciale 2020
Clos Saint Michel is situated in the village of Sorgues on the road to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The estate has been in the hands of the Mousset family for 60 years and the business today is run by Franck Mousset alongside his brother, Olivier, both 4th generation wine makers. Cuvée Speciale is only made in the very best years, and 2020 was a sensational vintage for Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Made from the classic blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 30% Syrah; the grapes were hand-harvested and aged in oak for 18 months in a mixture of new and old barrels. Rich and velvety, this Châteauneuf-du-Pape reveals a nose of ripe blackberries, dried herbs, and a touch of black pepper. Silky tannins frame layers of dark chocolate, liquorice, and smoky oak. A full-bodied palate unfolds with elegance, leading to a lingering finish. Decadent yet balanced—a wine of true character and one which will only get better over the next 10 years.
